How To Create A Greener Kitchen On Earth Day
Saturday, April 22nd 2017 3:34pm
Hello and welcome to our blog here at PFS Kitchens in Coalisland, Co Tyrone, where we design, create and install quality kitchens and bedrooms. I don`t know if you are aware but today, April 22nd, is Earth Day, which as you may imagine has been created in an effort to raise awareness of the environmental challenges that need to be addressed if we are to ensure earth stays healthy for us and our ancestors.
Chloe Thacker, a Marketing Director at Hafele UK, has written an excellent article regarding Earth Day and 3 initiatives we can put into place in our kitchen to make it a greener place. She says that not only should the governments be acting on the issue of global warning etc but that every household should be doing their bit too.
Recycling In The Kitchen
Firstly she talks about the importance of re-organising the recycling where she says: "The latest thinking in kitchen design addresses the challenge head-on, with discreet, compartmentalised bins that not only make waste separation simple but which are hidden behind drawers and built into units to maintain the aesthetic appeal of your kitchen space."
Cutting Food Waste
Secondly she writes about how we should improve access to food which will then cut down waste: "Much waste is caused by food simply being pushed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten, only to be retrieved once use-by dates are long-gone. Clever cupboard and storage design eliminates this problem, with pull-out and swing-out shelves and baskets giving access to all of the cupboard contents quickly and easily. In this way, space is maximised too, making even the tightest kitchen functional and super efficient."
Finally she mentions lighting in the kitchen, she says: "Lighting in the kitchen can be both practical and beautiful, adapting to your changing use of the space throughout the day. From illuminating specific work areas with task lighting to creating a cosy atmosphere for entertaining - clever use of lighting can cut costs, save energy and enhance your kitchen experience." Country kitchens are hugely popular right now across the UK so if you are renovating your kitchen space this may be something that is of interest to you. The move towards country style kitchens is due to the fact that consumers love the traditional, authentic feel of them and as they often incorporate the kitchen island it makes them very much the way to go as more and more people want kitchens for both cooking and entertaining in.
